On February 29, 2024, a basic workshop on the topic of monopoly power will take place in Berlin: A lot of power in a few hands – the global and local consequences of corporate power. Together with Steffen Vogel from Oxfam, Tina Haupt from WEED and member of the supervisory board of Rebalance Now will shed light on the dark side of concentrated market power, using the example of agricultural supply chains, among others.
The concentration of economic power continues to increase. Fewer and fewer companies, for example the five large tech corporations or the four large German supermarket chains, are controlling ever larger parts of the economy. In doing so, they are increasing their profits and at the same time their power over their suppliers, producers, customers and politicians. Monopolies and oligopolies can assert their interests more easily, undermine democratic processes, create problematic dependencies, increase social inequality and slow down socio-ecological change. This has far-reaching consequences for the economy, the environment and society.
How can we counter this monopolization and take it into account in our (domestic) development work? In fact, a new international movement is emerging that wants to revive the political instruments of antitrust law against monopoly power. In this workshop, we will analyze the problem of corporate and monopoly power today and, in the second part, look at how you can anchor the topic in your work.
